MyHealthTeam Announces myAMDteam During Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month

New Patient Community Rich With Medically Reviewed Content and Support for People Living With Age-Related Macular Degeneration

SAN FRANCISCO, CA/February 27, 2025 — MyHealthTeam,  a Swoop company, the creator of one of the largest engaged patient communities for people facing chronic health conditions, today announced the launch of myAMDteam. Aligned with February’s Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month, this new website and patient community is dedicated to people living with AMD. It provides medically reviewed articles, resources, and content to help individuals understand symptoms, potential treatments, and guidance for talking with doctors. It also offers a chance to engage with others in the community to ask questions and learn from one another.

AMD is a leading cause of severe vision loss for people over 50 in the United States. It occurs when retinal cells in the macula — the region responsible for central vision — begin to break down, affecting activities like reading, driving, and watching TV.

AMD has two types: dry and wet. Dry AMD, the most common form, may cause people to see blank or blurry spots, as well as to have difficulty seeing in low light. Dry AMD may progress and cause advanced cell death in the retina, known as geographic atrophy (GA). Because GA can result in irreversible vision loss, it requires close monitoring.

Wet AMD affects approximately 10 percent of AMD patients, but it causes 90 percent of severe vision loss cases. Although the symptoms are similar to dry AMD, wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels leak fluid or blood into the retina. This leads to bulging, distorted vision, and loss of fine detail vision.

While anyone over 55 may develop AMD as they grow older, additional risk factors are family history, smoking, or having blue or light-colored eyes. While these characteristics are common in AMD patients, their exact impact on disease risk is unknown.

“Living with AMD comes with real and isolating challenges, so it’s crucial that people have the right support,” said Eric Peacock, co-founder and president of MyHealthTeam. “Our goal with myAMDteam is to educate people about the various stages of macular degeneration and possible treatments through an easy-to-use community with medically reviewed information.”

The new site, myAMDteam, includes:

  • Medically reviewed information about the condition, including symptoms, causes, and treatment and testing options
  • Insights and education on treatments and promising new diagnostic and treatment therapies
  • Community conversation and support from people with the same diagnosis
  • Guidance on managing this disease
