Medically reviewed content and resources for people with this autoimmune, neuromuscular disease
SAN FRANCISCO/August 12, 2024 — MyHealthTeam, creator of the largest and fastest-growing portfolio of patient communities for people facing chronic health conditions, announced today that it has launched MGteam, a social network to empower people living with myasthenia gravis (pronounced my-uh-STEE-nee-uh GRAH-vis). MGteam is a space where patients can share practical advice, insights, and emotional support from people who are also managing treatments and life with MG. The site also provides medically reviewed articles, videos, and resources about living with this chronic autoimmune, neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles, including the muscles of the face.

More than 70,000 Americans are diagnosed with MG. The disease typically manifests as drooping of one or both eyelids, blurred or double vision, changes in facial expressions, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, impaired speech, and weakness in the arms, hands, fingers, legs, or neck. As symptoms usually improve with rest, muscle weakness can come and go — making this a difficult condition for health care professionals to diagnose at first. Symptoms tend to progress over time and usually reach their worst within a few years after disease onset.
The degree of muscle weakness involved varies greatly among individuals, and MG affects all genders and racial and ethnic groups. It most commonly impacts women under age 40 and men over age 60, but it can occur at any age, including childhood. Myasthenia gravis is not inherited, nor is it contagious. Occasionally, the disease may occur in more than one member of the same family.
“With only 20 out of every 100,000 people in the United States having myasthenia gravis, it can be challenging for patients to meet others with the condition and find educational information from the small group of doctors specializing in myasthenia gravis,” said Eric Peacock, co-founder and CEO of MyHealthTeam. “MGteam provides a vibrant and supportive community where it is easy to connect and learn about myasthenia gravis.”
