Desmoid tumors are soft-tissue tumors that occur in the connective tissue, typically found in the abdomen, arms and legs. Although they don’t metastasize, desmoid tumors can be invasive and aggressive, acting more like cancers and growing into, and disrupting, nearby structures and organs. For this reason, people with desmoid tumors are often cared for by oncologists. There are approximately 1,000 to 1,650 new cases in the United States, annually. Most patients are diagnosed between 20 and 44 years of age, and women are approximately two to three times more likely than men to be diagnosed. Since desmoid tumors, also known as aggressive fibromatosis, are rare, creating this online community and resource center will provide a safe place for people with desmoid tumors to find the people, medically reviewed information and support they need.
“We are thrilled to partner with SpringWorks Therapeutics in creating a much needed social network for people living with desmoid tumors,” said Eric Peacock, co-founder and CEO, MyHealthTeam. “People with desmoid tumors typically do not live near or even know other patients with this condition, and they may live far away from the leading oncologists treating desmoid tumors. Our goal is to make it easy for them to connect with the desmoid community.”
The new site, MyDesmoidTumorTeam, includes:
This will be MyHealthTeam’s 13th social network dedicated to a rare disease. To date, the company’s work has helped more than 500,000 people facing a rare disease.
