SAN FRANCISCO, CA/February tbd, 2025 — MyHealthTeam, a Swoop company, the creator of one of the largest, engaged patient social networks in healthcare, has announced the launch of myMDteam. This new website and patient community is dedicated to those diagnosed with muscular dystrophy (MD) and their caregivers, with a focus on supporting those with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). It provides medically reviewed articles and resources. This content helps people to understand symptoms and potential treatments, while providing guidance for talking with doctors and an ability to ask questions, connect, and learn from others in this community.

Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases that cause muscles to gradually weaken and break down. Some types of MD progress rapidly, resulting in serious muscle damage and loss of the ability to walk, while others advance slowly and cause minimal disability. Symptoms can include muscle weakness, reduced mobility, and difficulty with everyday tasks. MD is considered a rare disease, affecting 1 in every 5,000 to 10,000 people worldwide. In the United States, about 250,000 individuals have MD or a related neuromuscular disorder.
The most common type of MD is Duchenne muscular dystrophy. DMD appears in childhood and progresses rapidly. Symptoms include difficulty walking and running, frequent falls, shortness of breath, fatigue, and more. DMD is caused by a mutation of the dystrophy gene on the X chromosome, which results in a lack of the dystrophin protein. Without this protein, muscle cells begin to break down and are replaced by fatty or fibrous tissue, causing the muscle to weaken.
While there is no known cure for MD or DMD, various therapies, medications, and physical therapy can help extend the time a person with these conditions remains mobile. These therapies can also assist with muscle strength in the heart and respiratory area. Trials for new therapies are ongoing.
“We created myMDteam for the individuals and families impacted by MD,” said Eric Peacock, co-founder and CEO of MyHealthTeam. “We are making it easy to connect with others on the same journey, share stories, and find medically approved information.”
