MyHealthTeam Launches “TEDhealthteam” to Help People Living With Thyroid Eye Disease

New patient community with medically reviewed online content and resources

SAN FRANCISCO, CA/August 6, 2024 — MyHealthTeam, creator of the largest and fastest-growing patient communities for people facing chronic health conditions, announced today that it launched TEDhealthteam, sponsored in part by Tourmaline Bio. This new patient community is dedicated to people living with the rare condition of thyroid eye disease (TED). The site provides medically reviewed content to help patients understand symptoms, learn about treatments, and talk with their care teams. Another great benefit is that members can connect with a community of people living with TED for peer support and to ask questions.

TED is a rare condition that affects 16 out of every 100,000 women and 2.9 out of every 100,000 men. Despite more women than men having TED, men are more likely to have a severe form of the disease. A TED diagnosis typically occurs in middle age, and genetics and lifestyle seem to play a role in its development. People who have a family member with the disease, or who have another autoimmune disease, are likely at a greater risk of developing the disorder. Smoking and certain vitamin deficiencies are also associated with the risk of developing TED.

TED is an autoimmune disease that affects the eye muscles and fatty tissue behind the eye. This tissue becomes inflamed, pushing the eyes forward — seemingly bulging — or causing the eyes and eyelids to become discolored and swollen. For some, the inflammation may lead to double vision, and in rare cases TED can cause blindness. TED is primarily associated with an overactive thyroid gland due to Graves’ disease, although it can rarely occur in patients with an underactive or normally functioning thyroid gland. About one-quarter of Graves’ patients develop TED.

“We are thrilled to partner with Tourmaline Bio in creating a much needed patient community for people living with thyroid eye disease,” said Eric Peacock, co-founder and CEO of MyHealthTeam. “Our goal is to make it easy for patients with TED to find actionable, medically reviewed content and a safe place to talk with others facing the condition.”

“We are proud to sponsor TEDhealthteam in order to create a space for patients who need support with their thyroid eye disease diagnosis,” said John S. Walsh, M.D., vice president and head of medical affairs at Tourmaline Bio.

The new site, TEDhealthteam, includes:

  • Medically approved information about the condition, including symptoms, causes, and current treatments
  • Insights and education on treatments and promising new diagnostic and treatment therapies
  • Community, connection, and conversation with people living with thyroid eye disease
  • Guidance on managing this rare disease, including tips to find a TED specialist

This will be MyHealthTeam’s 14th social network dedicated to a rare disease. To date, the company’s work has helped more than 500,000 people facing rare diseases.
